Activities in Snowdon Forest
Track conditions
The tracks in Snowdon Forest are used infrequently; many are marked routes only. Those to South Mavora Lake, Kiwi Burn Hut and the Whitestone River are checked and cleared once a year. The others are checked for markers yearly and cleared every three years. Some sectors can be very wet underfoot. Trampers and hunters should be well equipped.
Hunting
Deer, pigs and possums are found in Snowdon Forest. Permits for hunting are essential and should be obtained in advance for the Department of Conservation offices in Te Anau or Invercargill.
Hunting dogs are permitted in the forest from December to August but will not be permitted from September to November, due to lambing and calving season on adjoining land.
All dogs are to be caged or secured until off private land.
Please avoid disturbing stock at all times. Please advise neighbouring landowners if you are undertaking possum control in the forest. A permit must be obtained from the Department of Conservation in Te Anau.
Fishing
The Mararoa, Whitestone and Upukerora Rivers offer good fishing for brown and rainbow trout. The Upukerora is fly fishing only. A current fishing licence is required and anglers must adhere to its regulations. Ask owners before crossing private land and avoid disturbing stock.
