Activities at Mavora Lakes Park

Tracks and hunting

Red and fallow deer, chamois, pigs and possums are found in the park. Permits for hunting are essential and must be obtained in advance from the Department of Conservation in Te Anau. Special conditions apply during some public holidays. Shotguns and .22 rifles are prohibited.



Other activities

Boating

The Mararoa River between the lakes and below the South Mavora Lake provides good canoeing. Motorised craft are allowed only on the North Mavora Lake. Navigation safety bylaws prohibit the use of jet skis. Before launching your boat please check for invasive weeds.

Fishing

Brown and rainbow trout are found in the Mararoa River and both of the lakes. Anglers must have a current fishing licence for the season. The season is open from October 1 - April 30 for the Mararoa River and year round for the lakes. Artificial baits only are permitted, with a daily bag limit of two fish.

Horse trekking

Horse trekking is permitted within the park, but horses are not be tethered in the camping area. A holding paddock is provided at the bottom end of the North Lake and at Forks Hut.

Mountain biking and four-wheel driving

The track from the camping area to Boundary Hut is suitable for mountain biking and four wheel drive vehicles. The track into Forks Hut is very rough and is not recommended for vehicle access although it is suitable for mountain biking. Please keep to the tracks and roads to help reduce environmental damage. All vehicles are prohibited beyond Forks and Boundary Huts.
