Activities at Eyre Mountains

Tracks and hunting

A remote recreational experience has been preserved in this park helping to ensure a real 'backcountry flavour.' This is aided by an extensive network of tracks, huts and shelters.

The area is isolated and for the most part physically demanding. However for those keen on botanising, high country history, hunting, tramping and exploration, there is great scope and variety, from the valley floors to sub alpine zones, as well as opportunities for inter-valley crossings. There are also limited but challenging climbing opportunities including; Eyre Peak (1969m), and Jane Peak at 2022m, the highest in Southland outside Fiordland National Park.

You can hunt red deer, chamois and feral pigs.

Other activities

The area is also popular for:

  • Trout fishing, particularly in the Oreti and Mataura River catchments
  • Mountain biking up to Mount Bee Hut and Ridge and Shepherd Creek Hut
  • Some four wheel driving on formed tracks in the south of the park
  • Horse riding in Eyre Creek and Upper Mataura Valleys
  • Picnicking at road ends.
