Ulva Island, off Stewart Island/Rakiura, is a relatively-unmodified island sanctuary, free of introduced animal pests, and with full public access. It has an important role to play in the conservation of threatened species, as well as providing a great opportunity to experience New Zealand ecology.
As the result of an extensive eradication programme, the island was declared rat-free in 1997, and had South Island saddlebacks released there in 2000.
Visitors to Ulva will experience the richness and wildness of the island's plants and animals, supported by appropriate facilities and information. Through the experience visitors will appreciate the value of offshore islands as sanctuaries for species that cannot survive on New Zealand's main islands.
Location
The 3.5 kilometre-long Ulva Island is located in Paterson Inlet/Te Whaka a Te Wera, off Stewart Island/Rakiura.
