Four self-registration campsites are provided along the Haast Highway and all have picnic tables, toilets and shelters. Camping along the highway is restricted to these areas. Fire places are provided, though, during extreme conditions, total fire bans are imposed. Camping fees should be put in the honesty boxes at each camping area or paid at the Makarora Visitor Centre.
Relax on the shores of Lake Wanaka at this easily accessible and quiet campsite. Water sports include motor boating, skiing and fishing.
This is a standard campsite in the Wanaka/Makarora area. Camp near the Makarora River. Plenty of great activities are available nearby, such as hunting, tramping or fishing.
Camp alongside Lake Hawea in a large, grassy area with good shade from mountain beech trees. Walk around the lake, go fishing or swimming.
