West Matukituki Valley, Mount Aspiring National Park
The West and East Matukituki Valleys offer enjoyable day-walks, as well as access to a number of demanding tramping and climbing routes in Mount Aspiring National Park. This region’s special features were recognised nationally in 1964 when Mount Aspiring National Park was created, and internationally in 1990, with the establishment of the Te Wähipounamu – South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.
The valley walks cross farmland and beech forest flats, and the higher altitude routes negotiate alpine tussock grasslands and snowfields. The lower grassy river flats are leasehold farm land. Please respect this and do not disturb livestock.
