Plan & prepare
Getting there:
State Highway 12 runs through the forest. The Waipoua Forest Visitor Centre is located in the heart of Waipoua Forest, just 1 km off State Highway 12 (the turn off is sign posted).
Location and amenities:
- There is no general store, petrol station or supermarket in Waipoua Forest.
- Nearest petrol station is 28 km south at Kaihu, and 20 km north at Waimamaku.
- Nearest toilets are located at the Tane Mahuta Carpark or the Waipoua Visitor Centre.
For your safety:
- In strong winds, please beware of falling branches.
- Times shown are for a one way journey only, unless otherwise shown. If the return journey is more than 1 hour, food, drink, warm clothes and wet weather gear should be carried.
- On extended bush walks a compass and topographical map are recommended. Topographical maps can be obtained from Land Information New Zealand www.linz.govt.nz and DOC visitor centres.
- Weather conditions are changeable - always keep to the side of caution. Check Metservice weather www.metservice.co.nz.
Please note:
- Please ensure your footwear is clean before entering the bush, and is cleaned before visiting another site. This is to help prevent the spread of the kauri dieback disease Phytophthora taxon Agathis (PTA).
- Permits are required for dogs and hunting on conservation land, these can be acquired free of charge from the Kauri Coast Office.
