The Waipoua valley has a long history of Maori occupation, which continues to the present day. The area suffered from massive exploitation of the kauri forests, but they are now under the protection of DOC.
Waipoua is home to the kauri, one of the world’s mightiest trees. Kauri forest contains an abundance of other plant types including large trees like taraire, kohekohe, towai and northern rata and are important refuges for threatened wildlife.
