Kaitaia and its surrounding areas are popular with recreational water sport enthusiasts and trampers. It also offers short walks with fantastic views.

This area features scenic lakes and unique forest areas, including the sweetwater lakes and small kauri grove walks.

The Far North is renowned for its Māori and European history with historic attractions including relics and remains from the kauri timber industry - Kaitaia Walkway.

DOC looks after many reserves in this area, offering a range of recreation opportunities such as swimming, boating, and picnicking. Walkers are spoilt for choice, with options ranging from easy walks through kauri groves and around lake shores to longer tramps. The conservation values of this region, lakes and forests are high.

Location

Kaitaia is the last major town as you travel to the top of the North Island, and is the gateway to the Far North.
