Activities at Whangaroa
Tracks and walks
To reach the top of Dukes Nose (Kairara Rocks), you must climb 500 m up a very steep track. At the top, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Whangaroa Harbour.
The Motukawanui Island Track traverses Motukawanui Island, which is the largest island in the Cavalli Island group. The island features archaeological sites and is home to many native birds, including the endangered NZ dotterel.
Follow this track to St Paul’s Rock above the Bay of Islands town of Whangaroa to see spectacular views of the harbour.
This track is for experienced trampers. It first climbs over a saddle to an old farm road and then descends through regenerating forest to Wairakau Stream. It ends at Lane Cove Hut.
Other activities
Pekapeka Bay offers good fishing. Nearby beaches provide perfect opportunities for swimming and relaxing.
With its unique rock formation, the area is very distinctive and a beautiful place to explore by boat.
You can find another point of interest to the right of Lane Cove hut, where tidal forces have carved the rock façade along the beach into the shape of a wave.
