Visitor's wishing to take a horse or go hunting in the Clarence need to apply for an access permit through the DOC South Marlborough Area Office. Trampers and mountain bikers do not need an access permit.

Track and walks

The Clarence offers excellent recreation opportunities for trampers making the walk over the range to Warden Hut, a good weekend trip.

Mountain biking

Mountain bikers do not need an access permit. Mountain bikers are requested to use roads and formed tracks only.

Guided tours

DOC grants concessions to reputable tour operators, who offer visitors planning a trip to the Clarence the option of being taken to the area by a knowledgeable guide.

Horse trekking

Horse riders will find the Clarence experience hard to beat. You must get an Access Permit at all times of the year.

Rafting, canoeing and kayaking

Travelling the Clarence River by raft, canoe or kayak is a great way to see the Clarence Reserve. There are four huts accessible to river users; Seymour, Palmer, Goose Flat and Snowgrass. Please see the map for locations.

Hunting

Note: Hunting is not permitted during 4WD weekends.

Fishing/Game bird shooting

A Fish and Game New Zealand licence is required fishing and game bird shooting.
