Mountain biking

Mountain biking from Tamaki West Road end is possible if you don't mind a bit of hike-a-biking.

From the grass clearing and picnic area at the road end, follow the marked Stanfield Hut/Holmes Ridge Track. After a small river crossing the narrow track climbs steeply through bush and will require bikes to be carried for about 20 - 30 minutes until turning left onto the 4WD Holmes Ridge Track. This trail eventually narrows to single track through bush where you will need to carry your bike over some sections. At the bottom of Holmes Ridge Track you can carry on up the river to Stanfield Hut. 3 - 5 hours return from road end to West Branch Tamaki River.

Other activities

There are also opportunities for four-wheel driving and fishing in Eastern Ruahine Forest park.
