Waioeka Conservation Area

Introduction

West of the Waioeka Gorge lies Waioeka Conservation Area, an area of outstanding natural value. Wildlife species found indicate the outstanding nature of the habitat. Whio or blue ducks can be found at the headwaters of the Waioeka River and tributaries. New Zealand falcon can also be seen, as well as kaka, kiwi, and other common bush birds (including Kereru).

Location

The Conservation Area starts south west of Matawai, on State Highway 2 from Opotiki to Gisborne, and stops 7km south of Opotiki.

Getting there

Access to the Waioeka Conservation Area can be found:

  • off State Highway 2 on Redpath Road (via Wairata Road) approximately 40km from Opotiki,
  • Moanui Road (via Te Wera Road), 87km from Opotiki, and
  • Koranga Valley Road.
