Mountain biking on the Opiti Road
Mountain biking on Otipi Road
In 1952 the Motu River was suggested as a potential hydro dam site, resulting in Otipi Road being built. The river is now protected by a national water conservation order and the road is used by mountain bikers for recreation instead.
To reach Otipi Road follow State Highway 35 from Opotiki to the Old Motu Road turnoff which heads inland to Toatoa. From here follow the Takaputahi Road to the park boundary.
Once you reach the parking area, use the ford to cross the river and follow the old road up into the Raukumara Ranges - enjoy the views.
Rafting the Motu River
The Motu River is renowned for its unspoiled beauty and isolation. Rafting the river takes a minimum of 4 days (100 km) and as it is a Grade 4 river, the trip should only be undertaken by experienced users (there are also a number of commercial rafting companies that offer guided trips). From the Motu township follow the Motu Falls Road to the river crossing. Rafts can be launched from this point.
Hunting
The rugged nature of the Raukumara Ranges make for a challenging wilderness experience. Hunting is a popular recreational activity in the park, mainly because of the trophy class red deer available (animals are large with excellent antler growth). Wild pigs are found in the lower altitude regions, particularly on the fringe areas of the park.
