Your responsibilities

By taking your vehicle into St James Conservation Area, you agree to abide by the code of conduct to:
  • Lock the gate after you have gone through.
  • Only give the code to those registered under your name.
  • Ensure your vehicle is free of any weeds before entering the area.
  • Stay on the 4WD track and stop at the signs that mark the end of vehicle access.
  • Not take your vehicle on the Waiau River bed, or cross the river with your vehicle.
  • Decontaminate your vehicle at the last culvert before the top of Maling Pass to prevent the spread of didymo.
  • Abide by the NZ Transport laws and regulations covering all vehicles and drivers (eg: your vehicles are warranted and registered, drivers are licensed).

Be aware that walkers, mountain bikers and horse riders will also be on the two 4WD tracks:

  • Be prepared for the unexpected.
  • Drive at a speed that enables you to stop if a hazard arises.
  • Approach a blind corner no faster than walking speed as other users may be just around the corner.
  • Give way to walkers, horses and mountain bikes.
  • The general rule for vehicles is for downhill travelling vehicles to give way to uphill traffic.
