Activities at Mt Thomas Forest

Tracks and walks

Most walks start from the picnic area and range from one hour family walks to a full day traverse of the area.

One hut and one bivvy within Mt Thomas Forest can be reached by experienced backcountry trampers.

Hunting

A permit is required to hunt in this area. Permits are available from any DOC office in Canterbury; the nearest to Mt Thomas is Waimakariri Area Office in Rangiora.

Wooded Gully Picnic Area

Wooded Gully Picnic Area at the end of Haylands Road is a picturesque and popular site for picnics and camping. It has picnic tables, fireplaces and toilets.

Dogs

Dogs are permitted on the tracks (hunting dogs by valid permit only) but must be on a leash at all times. Please clean up after your dog.
