Activities in Karangahake Gorge

Mountain biking and cycling

Bicycles are allowed on the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway. Please dismount where signposted and be considerate of pedestrians and other users.

Fishing

There are opportunities for trout and coarse fishing. A license is required, which can be purchased from Fish and Game.

Kayaking and canoeing

Canoeing is possible on various sections of the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta Rivers. Life jackets and helmets are essential.

Climbing

There are opportunities for abseiling in the Karangahake Gorge.

Swimming

Some of the larger pools in the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta Rivers are suitable for swimming in summer.

Dog walking

Dogs are permitted on the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway, Crown Track and at Dickey Flat campsite. They must be on a lead at all times.

Guided activities

Goldfields Railway

Goldfields Railway provides passengers with a delightfully nostalgic journey from the historic mining town of Waihi to Waikino, gateway to the awesome Karangahake Gorge. The journey, by vintage train, passes over farmland and through cuttings hewn from solid rock affording great views of the sparking Ohinemuri River along the way.

Victoria Battery Tramway Society

This community volunteer group gives guided tours on a narrow gauge mining tramway and tours of the Victoria Battery's impressive ore kilns. They operate on Sundays and Public Holidays and can be contacted on:
