Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway

Just 60 km north-east of Hamilton, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, with the remainder of the track following along the banks of the Ohinemuri River.

Cycling

Bicycles are allowed on the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway, except for between the Eastern and Western Portal bridges.

Fishing

There are opportunities for trout and coarse fishing.

Canoeing

Canoeing is possible on various sections of the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta Rivers. Life jackets and helmets are essential.

Abseiling

There are opportunities for abseiling in the Karangahake Gorge.

Swimming

Some of the larger pools in the Ohinemuri and Waitawheta Rivers are suitable for swimming in summer.

Dog walking

Dogs are permitted on the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway only. They must be on a lead at all times. Dogs are not permitted on the Windows Walk or the Crown Tramway Track.
