Getting there

The Kaimai Heritage Trail is located in the northern Kaimai Range at the southern end of the Coromandel between Paeroa and Waihi.

Kaimai Heritage Trail destinations are accessible via SH2 at Karanagahake and Waikino, and via SH26 at Te Aroha.

These places feature convenient parking with short walks to see amazing things.

Windows Walk, Karangahake

There are several carparks for you to use when visiting the Karangahake Gorge, on SH 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. Take care when turning on to this busy road.

Waitawheta Tramline, Waihi

Park your vehicle at the end of Franklin Road to start the Waitawheta Tramway Track. Please follow the markers as the track crosses private farm land.

Piako County Tramway (Waiorongomai Valley), Te Aroha

Ample carparking is available at the end of Waiorongomai Loop Road, 2km south of Te Aroha.

Safety

  • Mine tunnels and shafts are very dangerous and may be hidden by vegetation. Do not enter tunnels unless they are marked for public access.
  • Take torches to explore the mining tunnels and caverns in the Karangahake Gorge.
  • The Waitawheta River can rise quickly after heavy rain.
