Safety

  • The Waitawheta River can rise quickly after heavy rain. Caution is advised.
  • Take torches to explore the mining tunnels and caverns in the Karangahake Gorge.
  • Mine tunnels and shafts are very dangerous and may be hidden by vegetation. Do not enter tunnels unless they are marked for public access.

Getting there

There are many access points to the Kaimai Heritage Trail:

  • Waitawheta Valley: Park your vehicle at the end of Franklin Road to start the Waitawheta Tramway Track. Please be follow the markers as the track crosses private farm land.
  • Karangahake Gorge: There are several carparks for you to use when visiting the Karangahake Gorge, on SH 2 between Paeroa and Waihi. Take care when turning on to this busy road. 
  • Waiorongomai Valley: Ample carparking is available at the end of Waiorongomai Loop Road, 2km south of Te Aroha.
  • Katikati Kauri Dams: The best example of  kauri dams in the Kaimai are on the Lindemann Loop Track, located at the end of Lindemann's Road, north of Katikati.
