Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway

Just 60 km north-east of Hamilton, the Karangahake Gorge Historic Walkway follows the old railway line between Paeroa and Waihi, with the remainder of the track following along the banks of the Ohinemuri River.

Beautiful views from the Mount Te Aroha summit.

Waiorongomai & Mount Te Aroha tramping tracks

There are a number of different tracks up and around Mt Te Aroha and the Waiorongomai valley. Choose 1-2 hour walks, or combine several listed here for a full and challenging day's walk.

Waitawheta Tramway

This track is relatively flat but requires several river crossings as it follows an old tramline through the spectacular Waitawheta Gorge.

Lindemann Loop Track

There is a popular lookout through this track with scenic views over the northern Bay of Plenty.

Other activities

Rock climbing, mountain biking and fly fishing are all fun activities in addition to tramping or walking the Kaimai Heritage Trail.

The Waitawheta River offers some of the best trout fishing in the area, alongside the historic tramway.

Cyclists and dog walkers are welcome on the Karangahake Historic Walkway.
