Lake Rerewhakaaitu supports a large
breeding population of banded dotterel

Lake Rerewhakaaitu is a site of special wildlife interest. It supports breeding populations of dabchicks, scaup and the largest breeding population of banded dotterel in the Rotorua Ecological District.

Location

Lake Rerewhakaaitu is 29 km south-east of Rotorua. For vehicle access to the lake, turn off State Highway 5 onto State Highway 38 and then onto Rerewhakaaitu Road.

Two Department of Conservation campsites around the lake are at Ash Pit Bay and Awaatua Bay. Both are self-registration and first come, first served.

The Rotorua District Council administers a campsite at Roe Reserve.

The lake is the only water source, so it is advisable to bring drinking water. Toilets are provided. Open fires are prohibited – please use barbecue facilities where provided, or portable gas cookers. There is no rubbish collection, so please take your rubbish with you.

Plan and prepare

Open fires, and removal of plants or animals are not permitted. Dogs must be under control at all times.
