Trampers, Whirinaki Forest Park

Opportunities for tramping range from overnight trips to five or more days. These vary widely in terms of the experience and level of fitness required. Superb short walks close to Minginui vary from a few minutes to a full day. These provide an easily accessible insight to the forest.

Whirinaki Waterfalls Track

On the Whirinaki Waterfall Track you'll follow the Whirinaki River as it flows through podocarp forest.

Arohaki Lagoon.

Arohaki Lagoon Track

Take the Arohaki Lagoon Track in Whirinaki Forest Park as it winds through tawa/podocarp forest. The lagoon is surrounded by kahikatea and is home to frogs and other wildlife.

The H Tree at the H Tree Track.

H Tree Track

The H Tree Track in Whirinaki Forest Park is a 45-minute loop track that meanders through podocarp forest. The forest is home to a number of native birds, including kaka.

Sanctuary Track

Whirinaki Forest Park's Sanctuary Track is an easy loop track that leads through remnant podocarp forest.

Waiatiu Falls Track.

Waiatiu Falls Track

A 1 hour 30 minutes return walk, the Waiatiu Falls Track in Whirinaki Forest Park leads through podocarp forest before reaching the picturesque falls.

Whirinaki Track

The Whirinaki Track in Whirinaki Forest Park follows an easy to medium grade and takes 2 to 5 days to walk. Natural features along the track include caves and waterfalls.


Other activities

Hunting

Hunting for red deer and pigs is a very popular activity at Whirinaki. Hunters are welcomed because of the service they provide in controlling wild animal numbers. Deer, pig hunting and possum trapping are on an open permit system all year round.

Dog access is controlled by permit, subject to approval and/or special conditions from DOC. Find out more about dog access on conservation land.
