Anchor Bay, Tāwharanui Marine Reserve
The Tāwharanui Marine Reserve was established in September 2011. The 400 hectare marine reserve replaces the existing Tawharanui Marine Park, which has been a no take fishing area since 1981.
The Tāwharanui Marine Reserve is the fifth marine reserve in the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, New Zealand's "national park" of the sea.
The marine reserve is already a popular destination for people in the Auckland region who go there to enjoy its great beaches, clear waters and beautiful scenery. Popular activities include swimming, snorkelling, surfing and picnicking.
Tāwharanui Marine Reserve contains a range of habitats including interidal rock platforms, reefs with overhangs, tunnels and caves.
The best way to experience the marine reserve is by snorkelling or diving. With its excellent beaches, Tāwharanui is also a great spot for picnicking, swimming and surfing.
A campground and bach are available in the adjacent Tawharanui Regional Park, and a range of other accommodation in nearly settlements.
The turn off to the marine reserve is just past Matakana. Bring swimming and snorkelling gear, sun protection, and food and drinking water.
Find out about the fish and lobster surveys that have been done in the Tawharanui Marine Park, which preceded the marine reserve.
