Introduction

The Department of Conservation Auckland Visitor Centre is your gateway to the many conservation sites in the region. You can:

  • Ask us about visiting Rangitoto Island, in the heart of the Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, our iconic youngest volcano.
  • Take a ferry cruise from the nearby wharf to Tiritiri Matangi Island where can you see NZ's rare takahe, alongside many other endangered NZ birds.
  • Find out about Auckland's historic coastal military defence sites scattered around the region, on the mainland and on islands in the gulf.
  • Plan your trip to Cape Rodney where you can snorkel amongst blue maomao and huge snapper in NZ's oldest marine reserve.
  • Discover the isolation and lush native forest of Great Barrier Island.

The opening hours for the Centre are:

  • Mon - Fri: 9.00 am - 5.00 pm
  • Sat: 10.00 am - 3.00 pm (1 October to 16 April)
  • Sun and public holidays: The DOC desk at the i-SITE is closed however limited information, such as brochures, are still available plus access to the Conservation website and bookings.

We can help with:

  • National and local recreation and track information (please note we only stock a limited range of topographical maps).
  • Brochures, park maps, conservation books.
  • Campsite information, hut tickets and annual passes. Annual hut passes and hut tickets can be posted to you when pre-paid. FMC members need to provide a copy of their membership card.
  • Great Walk bookings.
  • Information on becoming a conservation volunteer.
  • General conservation information and advice.

The Visitor Centre is located at Auckland Tourism's i-SITE situated at 137 Quay Street, Princes Wharf, Downtown Auckland city. Come inside and see our friendly staff at the 'DOC desk'.
