Plan & prepare
Getting there
A number of private ferry operators run trips to Rangitoto Wharf and some to Islington Bay Wharf. Check with the Auckland Visitor Centre for details of all services.
Take care not to miss your ferry back as there is no overnight accommodation on the island and alternative transport to the mainland is expensive!
Islington Bay is a popular anchorage for private boats.
What you need to bring
- Water/drink. There are no supplies or drinking water available on the island.
- Sturdy walking shoes/boots that can cope with the island's rugged lava surfaces.
- Sunhat and sunscreen. The heat rays reflecting off the lava can be intense.
Transport
Fullers have a concession to operate a tractor 'train' ride to the summit. Ph +64 9 367 9111 for bookings and details.
Rangitoto/Motutapu islands restoration project
An operation to eradicate the last animal pests from Rangitoto and Motutapu islands is underway. The long term success of this project depends on everyone to prevent reinvasion. You can help by:
- Checking your boat or kayak and gear for rodent or insect stowaways before you leave the mainland.
- Cleaning footwear, clothing and gear and checking for seeds - weeds are a problem on the island.
- Packing luggage and food you are bringing to the island in rodent proof containers - no open containers or plastic bags please.
- Leaving your dog or other domestic pets at home - dogs pose a risk to the native species on this island.
Looking after Rangitoto
- Do not light open fires. They can easily get out of control.
- Take your rubbish off the island with you. There are no rubbish disposal facilities on Rangitoto.
- Do not remove or disturb any plants or historic artefacts.
- Keep to the tracks so you don't disturb plant life, or endanger yourself on the lava.
Non-compliance with these conditions may result in prosecution.
