Introduction

If you haven't experienced an overnight stay in a DOC hut before, these huts in Canterbury are a great option to start with - they're easy to get to, with a 2-3 hour walk.

From huts where you need to bring all you own cooking equipment to lodges with fully equipped kitchens, DOC's accommodation caters to a range of comfort and experience.

Packhorse Hut

This historic stone hut is can be accessed easily from Kaituna Valley, and is suitable for small children and family groups. It's situated on a low open saddle on the ridge between Mt Bradley and the Remarkable Dykes.

Hawdon Hut

A nice walk in along the riverbed, Hawdon Hut has stunning views up the valley. It's a great hut for families or those new to tramping.

The walk in to Nina Hut crosses the Lewis River and sidles through beech forest above the Nina River. From the hut you can admire the great mountain views.

This popular hut is nestled in amongst tussock landscape, sitting on the bank of Woolshed Creek, with great views of the surrounding hills. It sleeps 28 people, with a large living space, and lockers in the bunkrooms to store your gear.
