Puketi cabins
Getting there
There are several places that you can access the recreational area from. The recommended entry point is from SH10 approximately 600 m north of the Waipapa Township.
Turn left along Pungaere Road past the sign directing you to the Puketi Forest Park. Follow Pungaere Road for approximately 15 km. Take care as part of the road is gravelled. At a T-intersection, turn left, follow the road for about 2 km. The entrance of the recreational area will be on your right.
The cabins are immediately adjacent to the Puketi Forest Hut.
If using alternative routes, refer to local maps as there is no DOC signage at other possible entry points to the Puketi Forest.
Features
Positioned in one of the largest continuous tracts of native forest in Northland, the forest is thriving with native plants and animals. There is good walking for all fitness levels and a large grass area in front of the cabins ideal for group activities and picnics.

- The cabins have 3 bed spaces: 1 double bunk and 1 single bed.

The Puketi Recreation area also has a hut and a campground available.

Bookings
- The cabins are only available for sole occupancy.
- Bookings are limited to 7 consecutive nights.
- When making bookings, you need only provide one name regardless of the amount of people. Note that a cabin can only accommodate 3 people.
- Bookings are essential. You can book the cabins via the online booking system. Before you book, read the terms & conditions.
Notes
- The cabins are locked and require a combination code to get in. You need to contact the Bay of Islands Area Office. Combination codes will only be issued during business hours.
- The cabins are sole occupancy. Only the occupants of the cabins have use of the cabins.
- 021 and 027 cellphone coverage is available in some areas
- The hut is sole occupancy, only those occupying the hut will have use of the hut facilities
- Open fires are prohibited. However, there are designated outdoor fireplaces in the campground. Always follow fire safety signage.
- Domestic pets or animals are not permitted in or around the hut, cabins or campground
- You must report all damages to the DOC Bay of Islands Area Office
Plan and prepare
Check in time: Between 12pm and 4pm
Check out time: Between 8am and 12pm
What you need to bring:
- Bedding and linen
- Gas cookers only
- Cutlery, plates, cups and all cooking utensils
- Personal hygiene equipment
- Cleaning supplies and equipment
- All rubbish needs to be packed out on leaving
- Designated car parking available right next to the cabins
