Tiritiri Matangi Island bunkhouse

The bunkhouse on Tiritiri Matangi Island can be booked for overnight stays. However, this facility has limited availability as it is primarily used by volunteers and students carrying out work on the island.

Getting there

There is a regular ferry service which operates every day apart from Mondays and Tuesdays. Please be aware of this if you are booking the bunkhouse on Sunday, Monday or Tuesday nights. The ferry does operate on public holidays (excluding Christmas Day) and every day over the period from 26 December to the third Sunday in January.

You can book the ferry with 360 Discovery through their website www.360discovery.co.nz. As both the bunkhouse and ferry service can get booked out in advance for long periods, it is best to check both are available for your chosen dates before going ahead and finalising both bookings.

Please note, the wharf may only be used for loading or unloading passengers.

Biosecurity requirements

Tiritiri Matangi is free of animal pests. However, there is a real risk that rats, mice and other pests could be brought to the island in your belongings.

To prevent this happening it is a requirement for all visitors to check their gear and ensure it has been packed correctly:

  • Shoes and clothing must be free of dirt and seed material and packed in closed bags.
  • All luggage, including food must be packed in sealed containers e.g. plastic bins with completely sealed lids or cardboard boxes that are completely taped along every seam. Plastic/open bags/boxes or boxes with holes (e.g. banana boxes) and incorrectly packaged food will not be allowed on the island.
  • All sleeping bags need to be checked and packed inside zipped bags i.e. not carried separately.

Biosecurity checklist

All visitors must complete the biosecurity checklist and take it to the island with them.
