From Auckland by private boat, charter boat, kayak or water taxi. Check with the Auckland Visitor Centre for details.

Features

Motuora is a predator free island sanctuary for native flora and fauna. The islands restoration is managed by the Motuora Restoration Society and there is a kiwi recovery programme operating on the island. There are lovely beaches with good swimming or snorkelling and plenty of walking tracks. The small basic cottage is 50 m from the beach and beachside camping is also available.

$51.50 per night, bookings are essential

Plan and prepare

  • Advanced bookings are essential.
  • Check your boat or kayak and gear for insects or rodent stoways.
  • Clean your footwear, clothing and gear and check for seeds - weeds are a problem on the island.
  • No pets - they are a threat to native birds.
  • Do not light open fires.
  • Observe the signs and avoid shore bird nesting areas.
  • Stay on tracks to protect native vegetation and restoration work.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the bach - smoking is permitted on the beach and in the campsite only.
