Tongariro National Park

Tongariro is New Zealand's oldest national park and a dual World Heritage area. This status recognises the park's important Maori cultural and spiritual associations as well as its outstanding volcanic features.

Camp in the forest on the flanks of Mt Ruapehu. This is a good base for exploring the park. At the park entrance there is a nice short walk. Go walking, tramping or venture into the alpine areas – if you are well prepared. Alpine weather changes quickly.

Camping costs $4 per adult and $2 per youth. Children are free.
