Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) campsite rules

Fires

• No open fires permitted in the camp or in the reserve.
• Use only gas or liquid fuelled cookers.
• DOC Northland enforces the 3-metre rule between groups/family/parties (i.e. groups not individual tents) to reduce possible fire spread.
• Wind barriers/surrounds are acceptable within a group but should not be used to link groups as the risk of fire spread is too great.
• Fireworks and sky lanterns are absolutely banned.

Vehicles

• The speed limit within the camp is 10km/h.
• Vehicles are not to be used for internal camp transportation.
• Please refrain from driving vehicles on the beach or on dunes.

Dish washing

• Please do not wash your dishes at the water points (taps).
• Dispose of food scraps with your other rubbish.
• Wash dishes at your camp and dispose of water only in the shelter plantings.

Motors

• No chainsaws, generators or compressors are allowed in the reserve.

Noise

• Be considerate of other campsite users.
• Keep noise levels down especially between 10pm and 7am.

Rubbish

• During the summer season a 'User pays' rubbish collection is operated for general rubbish disposal (excluding fish offal). Buy your pre-paid rubbish bags from the camp manager.
• All other times of year, 'Take in - Take Out' rubbish policy is in place.

Conduct

• Conduct of any person(s), which is considered to be unacceptable, e.g. nudity, violence, excessive noise, etc. will result with the immediate removal of those concerned.

Recycling

• Recycling bins for aluminium, glass, plastic, and cardboard (types 1 & 2 only) are provided - please use these for environmental reasons.

Water

• Please conserve water.
• To avoid the risk of infection, ensure that all drinking water is treated prior to drinking.

Animals

• No dogs or other domestic animals are permitted in the camp or on the reserve except registered guide dogs. This includes cats in campervans and caged birds.

Vegetation

• All vegetation within the reserve is protected.
• Please do not dump rubbish around camp vegetation as scraps attract vermin.

Sand dunes

• All sand dunes are sensitive natural areas, susceptible to erosion from excess trampling or other human activity.
• We are encouraging a good cover of vegetation for the dunes within the reserve and invite visitors to keep to the marked access points to the beach.

Vacant tents

• Unoccupied tents may not be pitched to secure specific sites or groups of sites.
• No site will be left unoccupied for a period greater than two days without prior permission from the Camp Manager in consultation (if need be) with the Manager Visitor Assets.
