Puketi Recreation Area
Location
The camp is located in Puketi Forest, about 20 km north of Kerikeri in the Bay of Islands.

Podocarps and Kauri are home to many rare native birds in Northland's Puketi and Omahuta forests.The forests provide a range of walking, tramping and camping opportunities.

Camp at the eastern edge of forest, close to kauri trees. Look out for native birds - kiwi, kokako, kaka and short tailed bats. Mountainbike along the Pirau and Mokau Ridge roads. This is an ideal base for day or overnight tramps.
Notes
- Access: 16 km of gravel road
- Campfires permitted. Be aware of fire bans and the higher fire risk during summer months. You may need a permit for your fire. Contact the local DOC office or Council for details. Follow the on-site signs.
- Firewood provided
- Camp host on site from December to late January
- Self-registration during off-peak period
- Back-country hut pass does not apply
- NZMCA pass not valid
- Puketi Recreation area also has a hut and cabins available
- No dogs due to risks to wildlife.
Getting there

Puketi Recreation Area
Travelling from north, you can access Puketi camp turn off SH1 on to Puketi Road, then turn off left on Waiare Road. There is clear signage all the way.
From south, turn off SH10 on to Pungaere Road approximately 600m north of the Waipapa township. For alternative routes, please refer to travelling maps as there is no DOC signage at other possible entry points.

The campsite is an ideal base from which to explore the attractions of these forests, which provide a range of walking and tramping opportunities for all fitness levels.
Permits for hunting goats and pigs are available from the Bay of Islands DOC office.
