Totaranui campground

Alert/Important notice

Road is closed but campground open and accessible by boat.

The road to Totaranui is closed due to slips caused by heavy rain. It will remain closed to all public until after winter 2012. We will keep you informed of progress.

The Totaranui campground is open, fully functioning and ready for visitors, with all services available including drinking water, toilet facilities, ice, etc.

Although there is no road access, Totaranui can still be accessed by private boat or water taxi. Abel Tasman water transport operators are offering special deals to carry campers and their gear to and from Totaranui, departing from Kaiteriteri, Marahau and Tarakohe. Some are also able to assist with long-stay car parking at departure points as part of their packages. See Getting there for more information.

Bread and milk is available at the shop - located in the camp office.

Coast Walk trampers

Coast Walk trampers must camp in X Bay. Please check this location on the map at the office.

Coast Walk trampers are reminded there is a pack-in pack-out policy for rubbish along the Coastal Track. All rubbish must be removed.

Peak (1 October to 30 April): $12.50 adult/ night, $6.50 child/night (5-17 years), under 5 free. Off-peak (1 May to 30 September): $8.00 adult/ night, $4.00 child/night (5-17 years), under 5 free

  • The Totaranui campground 2012-13 booking form, and rules and conditions for the peak season, will be available online from mid June 2012.

  • Bookings will be accepted between 1-10 August for the summer season. Spaces will be balloted due to the high demand for camp sites.

Refunds

Those campers seeking a refund due to the closure of road access to Totaranui last summer should make a written request (post to Totaranui Campground, Department of Conservation, PO Box 166, Takaka 7142 or email totaranui@doc.govt.nz) to the Totaranui Office giving their credit card details (including expiry date). All details will be kept confidential.

The last day to request a refund will be 31 May 2012. The deposit cannot be used for future bookings.

Refunds will be made as soon as possible but may take 2-3 weeks to be processed.

Those no longer going ahead with their planned camping holiday at Totaranui may wish to book spaces at other DOC campgrounds in Nelson Marlborough including:

Totaranui

In the northern end of Abel Tasman National Park, Totaranui campground is close to the beach and to the best stands of native bush remaining in the park.

It is a large campground, taking up to 850 campers, and is a great base for activities. Relax on the beach, swim, kayak fish or explore the tracks nearby. The Abel Tasman Coast Track also starts here.

Totaranui Great Walk campsite is inside this campground.

  • Wheelchair accessible, and wheelchair accessible with assistance. Accessible facilities may include toilets, water supply, showers, picnic tables, kitchens and pathways.
  • No dogs permitted.
  • No powered sites.
  • Campfires permitted only in fireplaces provided. Be aware of fire bans and higher fire risk during summer months. You may need a permit for your fire. Contact the local DOC office or Council for details. Follow the onsite signs.
