Abel Tasman National Park

Abel Tasman National Park is renowned for its golden beaches, sculptured granite cliffs, and its world-famous coast track.

Fees

Peak (1 October to 30 April): $12.00 per adult per night, $6.00 per child per night. Off-peak (1 May to 30 September): $8.00 per adult per night, $4.00 per child per night.

Totaranui

In the northern end of Abel Tasman National Park, Totaranui campsite is close to the beach and to the best stands of native bush remaining in the park.

It is a large campground, taking up to 850 campers, and is a great base for activities. Relax on the beach, swim, kayak fish or explore the tracks nearby. The Abel Tasman Coast Track also starts here.

Totaranui Great Walk campsite is inside this campground.

Notes

  • Gravel road or boat access.
  • Wheelchair accessible, and wheelchair accessible with assistance. Accessible facilities may include toilets, water supply, showers, picnic tables, kitchens and pathways.
  • No dogs permitted.
  • No powered sites.
  • Campfires permitted only in fireplaces provided. Be aware of fire bans and higher fire risk during summer months. You may need a permit for your fire. Contact the local DOC office or Council for details. Follow the onsite signs.
  • Campsite has:
    • filtered water
    • public phone
    • boat ramp
    • dump station
    • recycling facilities
  • NZMCA pass is not valid all year round.

Getting there

32 km east of Takaka (1 hour unsealed road) on Abel Tasman Dr, then Totaranui Rd to end, or by water taxi from Marahau (2 hours).

Types of Conservation Campsite

Conservation Campsites are accessible by vehicle. You can drive to most and boat-in to some. Each Conservation Campsite is unique but the facilities and services provided at campsites are divided into three categories; Serviced, Standard, Basic.

Fees are charged according to the campsite category and the level of facilities and services provided. Find out more about these campsite categories.

Booking

  • Booking required 10 Dec - 10 Feb. Bookings should be made during the first week of July; a ballot system is used to allocate sites. At all other times register at the camp office. Ph +64 3 528 8083, email totaranui@doc.govt.nz.
