Conservation Campsites offer a range of services and facilities but are generally basic so for your own comfort you need to be self sufficient.

Camping areas range from basic sites with very limited facilities such as pit toilets and stream water to a few well serviced grounds with a camp warden, hot showers, lighting and rubbish collection.

Freedom camping is permitted except along the Great Walk tracks and wherever there are 'no camping' signs. Make sure you leave no trace of your visit. Take your rubbish with you and dispose of toilet waster appropriately.

Motor home and caravan use

Motor homes are welcome at all Conservation Campsites. There are no dump stations for toilet waste so please use facilities provided in nearby towns. Pick up a list of dump stations from visitor centres or from the Ministry of Tourism website (PDF, 1000K).

Limit generator use between 8am and 9pm and always drive along formed roads. Generators cannot be used in Northland campsites.

When using a motor-home or caravan outside a Conservation Campsite it should be self contained and be able to meet the ablutionary and sanitary needs of the occupants for three days.
