Getting there

2 hours 15 minutes easy walk on the Orongorongo Track. Jans hut lies in bush on the east side of the Orongorongo Valley, approximately 15 minutes from Turere Bridge. Cross the Orongorongo River to Browns Stream, which is visible directly opposite the Turere Bridge. About 100 metres up Browns Stream (opposite Waerenga Hut) a large orange triangle marks the track start on the true right. Follow the track marked with coloured triangles to Oaks Hut (light blue triangles). The track to Jans Hut (white triangles) continues behind Oaks Hut. It is an undulating track which winds its way through the bush, parallel to the Orongorongo River. Approximately 5 minutes after leaving Oaks you will pass a privately owned hut on your left. The track to Jans makes a sharp right turn which is clearly visible; continue following the coloured triangles to Jans Hut.
