Getting there

Tangihua Forest is located halfway between Whangarei on Northland's east coast and Dargaville on the west coast. Access into the Tangihua Forest is from Omana, via Omana Road. The Omana Road access car park has parking for 15 cars.

You will need to walk 30 min along a formed road to the bush line. From here, it is another 15 min until you reach Lions Lodge.

To reach the Tangihua hut from the Lodge follow the Te Haua Uru Track which turns into the Northern Tangihua Route. This will take 8 - 9 hr.

An alternative route to the hut is via Tangihua Road which takes approximately 2 hr and crosses private land. If you are taking this route you must gain permission from the landowner - please contact the Whangarei Area Office before starting your trip.

The route to the hut requires a high degree of skill and experience and route-finding ability. Suitable for well equipped trampers.
