Introduction

Over 70 species of waterbirds feed and nest in this estuary! Many of these birds, like the godwit/kuaka, knot and golden plover fly all the way here from the northern hemisphere to enjoy a well deserved holiday in the sun.

Highlights

  • Explore the mud flats, catch a fish and do some some serious bird watching.
  • Be prepared to get wet – Ahuriri Estuary is a great spot to swim and kayak.
  • Check out the pou at the start of the track – what do the carvings stand for?
