Family walking on the board walk at Aramoana
PHOTO: DOC

Introduction

It’s time to hit the beach! You might come across some seals and if you’ve got keen eyes you might see a majestic royal albatross/toroa. What creatures live in a salt marsh? And what’s this about a bear? We don’t have bears in New Zealand do we?

Highlights

  • Enjoy a walk along the boardwalk to the tidal salt marsh and the viewing platform at the end − what wildlife can you spot?
  • Build a sandcastle along the beach and decorate it with shells that you can find.
  • Take a dip in the sea when it’s hot, try your skills at bodyboarding.
  • Watch New Zealand fur seals/kekeno (from a safe distance of course!) at the end of the mole -  is it smelly?
