Located in Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki and North Egmont area in the Taranaki region

This is pleasant walk uphill through changing alpine rainforest, with an optional detour to a lookout point offering views of the mountain and out to the coast.

Limited parking at North Egmont road end

Car parking at the North Egmont road end is limited until December 2026 due to construction of the new visitor centre.

Large trucks will be using the road, so please drive carefully and expect occasional delays. We recommend carpooling or using a shuttle if you're planning a visit. The North Taranaki Visitor remains open.

No camping sign

No freedom camping in North Taranaki Visitor Centre car park

From 19 December 2025, freedom camping is prohibited at the North Taranaki Visitor Centre car park at Egmont Road end. You can overnight camp at Stratford Plateau car park on Pembroke Road or Mangorei Road car park (Pouakai Tarns tramp).

Follow the boardwalk past the Camphouse. From here the track leads past Ambury Monument and climbs a long series of steps. At the next junction the track loops back to the visitor centre through kamahi and Hall’s tōtara forest.

Alternatively, from the junction, continue up the Holly Hut Track for 10 minutes to reach a popular lookout point.

The track starts at the North Egmont Visitor Centre. 13 km south of New Plymouth, in Egmont Village, turn off SH23 into North Egmont Road. The visitor centre is signposted at the junction. Follow North Egmont Road for 16 km to the end.

Be ready for changeable weather

Taranaki Maunga has changeable and unpredictable weather. Check the forecast and carry enough clothing and equipment to ensure you are able to cope with any type of weather, at any time of the year.

Snow, high rainfall and storm damage can make tracks impassable.
