Karamea, the West Coast's best kept secret. For visitors who are not in a hurry, why not spend some extra time and explore the pleasant walks close to the township of Karamea.

There are a variety of walks in the Karamea area, from short strolls to longer walks and tramps – something to suit everyone.

Walks in the Kohaihai area

For those wanting an easy stroll, there are a couple of choices beginning from the Kohaihai camping area located at the start of the Heaphy Great Walk. 

Walk through lush forest of nikau palms, creeping kiekie and katote treeferns. Spend sometime on the Heaphy Track by walking the coastal section. 

At the end of the Nikau Walk you can continue on the Heaphy Track walking up and over the Kohaihai Saddle to Scotts Beach.

Time: 50 min return

Scotts Beach

Walks around Karamea

Close to the Karamea township you can spend from 15 minutes to one hour exploring some interesting sites. 

See the 1000 year old rimu, follow the track used by early settlers with views of the river flats and surrounding farmlands below. Immerse yourself in the wildlife habitat that was once a busy harbour in the late 1800s.

The South Terrace Zig Zag track and Karamea Estuary walk have been provided and are maintained by the Karamea community.

Walks in the Fenian area

This is an area rich in gold mining history dating back to the early 1900s. The car park providing access to these walks is off the Oparara Loop Road, 7 km from Karamea. 

Walking times and distances are from the Fenian car park. Sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness is required.
