About this track

Description

There is a great view of the coast and North Island from the summit of Mount Patutu (1162 m).

The first 3 hours follows an old farm track; the remaining 1 hour is a fairly steep climb to the summit.

Allow a full day for the return trip.

Getting there

The track starts at the Okiwi Bay Campsite, off SH1, 30 km north of Kaikoura.

Know before you go

Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
