About this track

Description

A well-formed bushwalk with scenic lookouts over Okere River and its spectacular waterfalls. There are numerous information panels along the track, describing the human and natural landscape.

A wide grassy area beside the main carpark provides a good site for a picnic, public toilets are provided here as well. The trout pool is a popular fishing spot, and trout are often seen swimming gently against the current.

From the main lookout platform by Hinemoa's steps you can watch rafters and kayakers sweep over the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world.

Getting there

Okere Falls walking track is located 21 km from Rotorua on Trout Pool road off SH 33 (the Rotorua to Tauranga highway).

Dangerously strong currents and waterfalls. Please keep to the track.

Stop the spread and keep Rotorua lakes free of pest fish

Report any sightings of koi carp (3-70 cm) or catfish (3-40 cm). Other fish of particular concern are rudd and gambusia.

You can help by photographing any specimens caught and forwarding to your local DOC office and by following Check Clean Dry protocols.

Invasive species are a problem because they reduce water quality and can compete with native species and trout.

For further information, or to report suspicious fish, contact your local DOC office or phone 0800 DOC HOT.
