Getting there

Westland Tai Poutini National Park (127,541 hectares) is about half way down the South Island on the West Coast. State Highway 6, between Hokitika and Haast, is the only road down the coast and to the park. The small centres of Weheka/Fox Glacier and Waiau/ Franz Josef are right on the park boundary. The nearest town is Hokitika to the north; and the closest airport. Regular bus services operate along the coast.

Park safety

The Westland Tai Poutini National Park lies in the path of prevailing westerly winds, which can bring heavy rain at any time of the year, although spring and early summer are peak times. Mountain areas are subject to severe mountain weather; lowland areas are more temperate. Come prepared to encounter all conditions, and bring insect repellent! Weather and track conditions can change dramatically in a short time. Please check at the Department of Conservation visitor centres for up-to date information on weather and track conditions. Leave details of your trip with a responsible person, and don’t forget to check in when you get back. Trip intention forms are available from DOC visitor centres or the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council www.mountainsafety.org.nz.
