Getting there
Egmont is one of the most accessible of New Zealand's national parks. It can be found on the western coast of the North Island. The nearest towns are New Plymouth, Inglewood, Stratford and Opunake.
There are three road entry points to the park:
- Manaia Road to Dawson Falls
- Egmont Road to North Egmont
- Pembroke Road to Stratford Plateau.
Safety
If you are going to be using the track system in the park for overnight trips make sure you are properly equipped and well prepared.
Egmont National Park is subject to sudden dramatic weather changes. Anyone going for more than a short walk should carry protective clothing, whatever the season. This includes woollen hat, gloves, boots, wind and waterproof parka, overtrousers and several layers of warm (wool or fleece) clothing.
Make sure your group has a capable leader and that everyone is carrying a sleeping bag, cooking utensils, sufficient high energy food (with some extra for emergencies), and suitable clothing. Please check at any of the Department of Conservation offices for up-to-date information on weather and track conditions. Fill in an intention form at the Visitor Centre and remember to let them know when you have completed your trip.
