Activities in Egmont National Park
Tracks and walks
The track system caters for those wanting easy short walks as well as more experienced walkers and climbers. However, all visitors should be well prepared as Egmont is particularly susceptible to rapid weather changes.
A variety of easy, short walks branch off the main access roads. A number of beautiful waterfalls are in easy reach of Dawson Falls and it is worth walking through the Goblin Forest to Wilkies Pools - a series of plunge pools formed by the scouring action of water borne sand and gravel.
A well defined tramping track circles the mountain. It takes up to 5 days or 3 - 4 days if you take the high level summer option.
Routes to the mountain summits are suitable for experienced trampers/climbers only.
This short 1.3 km track in Egmont National Park follows the Kapuni Stream through mountain rainforest to the top of Dawson Falls. The track then winds its way up to Manaia Road.
The Mount Taranaki Summit should only be attempted in good weather by experienced trampers with proper equipment.
The 25 km Pouakai Circuit is a tramp through forest, sub-alpine and mountainous terrain with some river crossings.
This walkway crosses farmland and returns along the Stony (Hangatahua) River. There are excellent views of Mount Taranaki, the Pouakai Range and the Stony River.
