Waianakarua hunting block
The Coastal Otago (north of the Catlins) hunting area consists of 45 000 hectares of forest and shrubland reserves near the coast with areas of tussock and schist tors in the uplands bordering Central Otago.
The most common species are goats, pigs and red deer. Tuapeka West Scenic Reserve has fallow deer, and Waianakarua some feral sheep.
Near the coast the climate is cool and moist with rainfall generally decreasing northwards. Inland the climate is drier but more extreme in temperature, as the landscape enters the upland transition zone between Coastal and Central Otago.
