The Manawatu/Rangitikei region provides many excellent hunting opportunities on public conservation land, whether your quarry is fallow deer, red deer, hares or possums. Rugged terrain, mixed forests, wetlands and rivers are some of the natural features you'll find in the region's conservation areas and scenic reserves.
Red deer is the most common and sought after game animal in this region and is found in moderate numbers throughout the Ruahine Ranges and in many reserves. Sambar deer can be hunted on private land with the landowner's consent. You need a permit to hunt sambar on public land.
There are a few areas in which hunting permits can be gained for water fowl, upland birds and rabbit shooting.
Location
The Manawatu/Rangitikei area extends from the Turakina to the Manawatu River mouth, inland to Woodville and north to Taihape. It includes the 100 km long Ruahine Forest Park. There is good road access to all the hunting blocks.
