The Whakatane Waioeka Urutawa region covers an area from just west of the Waiotahi Valley to Toatoa on the old Motu Road and inland to Matawai this includes Urutawa and Waioeka Conservation Areas. There is over 85,000 ha of public conservation land within this region. Hunting opportunities within the area include feral deer, pigs and goats.
The area is characterised by both large tracts of remote rugged forest areas as well as small accessible conservation areas.

This 39,200ha area covers a large part of the Waioeka River catchment, and is an area of outstanding natural value.
Located 14km south of Opotiki, the Urutawa Conservation Area is predominantly semi coastal and contains a wide variety of threatened birds and special fauna.
