The type of stag most hunters want to see

Map highlighting the Central North Island region of New Zealand.

The Turangi/Taupo hunting area covers the Central North Island, taking in Tongariro National Park, Erua and Tongariro forests and the Kaimanawa Mountains.

The forest and mountain lands administered by the Department of Conservation (DOC) within the Conservancy offer hunters excellent opportunity to hunt sika, red deer, wild pig and goats. Some of these herds, particularly the world renowned sika herd, present the hunter with a chance to bag trophy animals of a world class standard.

The climate in the central north island is a climate of some extremes, with high summer temperatures ranging into the high 20's celcius, but with the potential for snow on the higher areas even in summer.

Hunters need to prepare for this wide variety of possible climactic conditions.

Location

State Highway One offers excellent access right through this area, with numerous side roads and highways providing access to hunting on public conservation land.
