Hunting in the Ben Ohau Range, Ruataniwha Conservation Park
DOC's Twizel Te Manahuna Area Office manages the Mackenzie Country and Waitaki area, with over 220,000 hectares of public conservation land which includes Ahuriri and Ruataniwha conservation parks as well as the Godley, Oteake, Kirkliston and St Marys Range. The terrain ranges from steep rock and scree slopes, glaciers, braided rivers, beech forest and open tussock country.
The Mackenzie Country and Waitaki hunting blocks are well known for their tahr hunting potential. Chamois, wallabies, pigs and red deer are also found here. Special permits for small game animals, such as rabbits and hares, are not issued.
